journal again!

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

“Sh*t!”

Unexpectedly, a sticky and cold hand grasped my leg!
I glanced down—the little black dirty hands belonged to a Uigur boy who seemed to be no more than 4-year old and not so tall as my leg. “ Flower, sir” he blurred in a strange accent and swayed a bunch of flowers in front of me. He could not even pronounce “buy”, but apparently his gesture directly showed his will.

I was frightened by his dirtiness or his miserable life or both. I tried to let go of my leg, but I failed. For the boy just got on both of his knees and took hold of both my legs, crying. I was shocked and somewhat infuriated by his action. Leaped as high as I could, I extricated myself and ran away. I felt sorry for him and looked at him from distance compunctiously. Suddenly, a little Uigur girl who seemed to be the boy’s sister came towards the boy angrily and beat him up just because he was unable to sell.

This scene took place in downtown Shenzhen, where numerous skyscrapers, elaborately designed gardens and trees, broad street and luxurious shopping centers manifest its prosperity. This niceness, however, has nothing to do with the two kids although they live here—they should have enjoyed a happy childhood with their parents and friends, or they should have enjoyed education at school, playing with their classmates and dreaming about their future. But the truth is the kids just beseeched passersby to buy their flowers to make a living. They have been experiencing ordeals that children their age should not undergo. Knowing that buying their flowers meant giving them the money for their next meal, I couldn’t help going back and buying all the flowers. I was so glad that I could be of some kind of help. Soon afterwards, I realized that these two kids were merely two of many poor kids of their kind in the world I am living in. What I did could only help these two kids with their next meal but not their future and the future of other poor kids just like them—I believe there are tons of them out there.

First time in my life I began to seriously think about how unfair this world is to the two little kids. First time in my life I realized how lucky I am that I don’t have to experience all those the two little kids have been experiencing. First time in my life I became aware of how silly I was by taking all the good things I have for granted. Never before have I been so clear as to what I want. Yes. I want to change this world—to change the world into a better place for everyone.

Research paper outline

Topic: Can government really stabilize the economy?

Thesis statement (My view):
Due to some historical and statistical facts, government’s acts and policies to intervene the economy do helpful to stabilize the economy.

Introduction:
Different schools economists hold different points of view about the topic. The classic school, the rational-expectations school indicates that the government cannot really stabilize the economy. However, Keynesians and neo-Keynesians think that government’s acts, if act properly, do helpful to stabilize the economy.

Background Knowledge:
Different Schools of Economists View:

Against government intervention:
1. Classic View:
Argue that there is a nature tendency for an economy to move toward an macro equilibrium at full employment without inflation.
Adam Smith: there’s an “invisible-hand” of the market, so government do not to intervene the economy.
Failure examples:
The great depression in 1930s

2. Rational Exceptions View
They think that people’s anticipation of fiscal and monetary policies undermines the policy and thus the government’s act is not useful to stabilize the economy anymore.

Advocate government intervention:
1. Keynesian View:
The school of thought argues that by useful government adjustment and intervention, it is possible for an economy to reach the full employment without inflation.
1. Keynesian view of the unemployment
2. Keynesian view of inflation
3. Keynesian’s method to improve the economy during the great depression.

Supporting examples:
Economist Keynes advocates government intervention of economy. In the midist of 1930s’, he was invited to white house as a financial advisor for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After he demonstrates his view to president, Roosevelt supports his ideas and applies the New Deal. Soon the economy turns vivid again.

2. Neo Keynesian View
They revised the idea of Keynesian view about the possibility for an economy to reach full employment without any inflation because the statistics should the reverse relationship between the inflation rate and rate of unemployment. However, they believe that by managing the aggregate demand, government can achieve the most comfortable combination of inflation rate and the rate of unemployment.
Supporting examples:
The Humphrey-Hawkins Act of 1978
It states that, the most comfortable combination of unemployment and inflation in 1978 is 3percent rate of inflation and 4percent rate of unemployment. The government should force the economy to that rate by adjusting aggregate demand or government expenditure. This act reduces both the inflation rate and the rate of unemployment in the next 10 years.

Conclusion:
Although government cannot reduce the rate of unemployment and inflation rate to zero percent at the same time, government, however, can stabilize the economy by using propitiate policies in different situations.

Journal Topic: do automobiles really improve our life?

Although some people indicate that the automobile has improved modern life because automobiles make our life more convenient, I, however, think that automobiles cause more harmful effect than benefits they brought us because automobiles cause air pollution, traffic jam and numerous accidences.

First, automobiles exhausts contain nitric oxides, carbon oxides and variable kinds of hydrocarbons. These gases are detrimental and can seriously pollute our environment. According to high school chemistry text book, the nitric oxides can cause acid rain; carbon dioxides and hydrocarbons can increase the green house effect; the carbon monoxide is toxic to human beings and other animal’s health. Now a day’s automobiles exhaust is being considered as one of the most serious environmental problems.

Second, when more and more automobiles on the road, traffic jam will become a serious problem. In my hometown Shenzhen, a metropolitan city, for example, every morning when people on their way to work by automobiles, there will be traffic jams for at least 1.5 hours ranging from 8am to 9:30am because more than 600,000 automobiles are gathering on the Shennan Road and Riverside Road (two main avenue of the City). Same situation happens in every evening during the time that people back to home at 5pm to 7pm. Approximately everyone who lives in comfortable suburb may waste at least 2 hours to suffer the traffic jam during their way to work and their way back home. So, recently a increasing number of people sell the comfortable house at suburb and move to the apartment in the downtown because they cannot stand the long time they waste in the road.

Third, traffic evidence had already killed more than 30,000,000 people totally (WHO’s Statistics, updated to 2007) In China, more than 200,000 people are killed by the car collisions and more than 20,000,000 people suffered from the injury of traffic accidents (Traffic agency of P.R.China). According a scientific report by Traffic Agency of PRC, the death accidents caused by every 10000 cars in Chinese City ranges from 10.8 to 50 per year, which means that every year in Chinese cities, every 10000cars can cause every 10.8 to 50 people die. How terrible it is!

To conclude, automobiles do bring convenience to us and in this case improve our life. However, because of the air pollution, the traffic jams and the traffic accidents, automobiles in fact, decrease our life quality.

journal again. topic is the first sentence of the essay.

Do parents or other adult relatives should make important decisions for their older (15 to 18 year-old) teenage children? Some people, especially teenagers, may argue that teenagers are old enough to make important decisions for them because they are old enough to know what to do is beneficial. Others and I, however, think that parents must be the decision makers when it comes to critical problems. The first reason is that parents have more experience than teenagers’. Another reason is that parents have to spend money on some critical issues so that they have the right to make decisions.

First, parents experienced more than those teenagers, so that parents know more about what the teenagers’ future will be. For example, parents know the benefit to study in universities but some of the teenagers may not know. Some teenagers, especially those who do not like to study, may think that attending university for further education is so boring that can do nothing beneficial to their career. But in fact, parents’ opinions are right. So, parents should make decisions for teenagers on issues such as “attend university or not”.

Second, old teenagers are not completely independent because that they cannot make much money by themselves. For example, Tim, a 16years old boy thinks that the price of AIG’s stock may rise in 4days and he wants to spent 10000$ to buy them. But can he do that without parents’ permission? No. because Tim has no money generated by his own before. He needs financial supports from his parents. In this case, the decision making right belongs to Tim’s parents rather that Tim. Another example is that Sam, a boy from a not rich family in Illinois, gets UIUC’s full scholar ship and U Chicago’s admission without any financial aid. Which school he should go to is not up to Sam, in stead, up to Sam’s parents for the same reason.
To conclude, teenagers at 15 to 18 age can make normal decisions (important decisions excluded of course) most of the time. In these cases, parents can give teenagers advices and the decision making right belongs to teenagers. However, when it comes to important issues especially related to large amount of money expenditure, the decision making rights totally belongs to parents.

C&E
Topic: the harmful effect of smoking

Thesis statement: smoking is bad for our health

Cause: the action of smoking

Effect:Topic sentence 1: the nicotinic smog of cigarettes contains numerous kinds of toxins that can cause cancers and reduce the smoker’s life-span and contributes to a number of cancers.

Supporting details
There are at least 20 kinds of toxins in cigarette.
The most powerful toxin is nicotine. We can easily kill a dog by injecting one drop of nicotine to its vein. Also nicotine will hold back the smoker’s absorbing the vitamin C.
Nicotine smog, which constructed by nicotine and carbon monoxide, can temporarily increases the smoker’s heart rate and blood pressure, straining the smokers heart and brain’s blood vessels.
The smog can also pollute the smoker’s lungs and cause the lung cancer.

Topic sentence 2: smoking not only causes physically diseases, but also mentally diseases such as neurasthenic.
Long term smoking can cause neurasthenic diseases and psychotic disorder because the nicotine can damage the smoker’s brain and neural system.. The symptoms of the long-term smoker are that it is hard for them to control temper and they are easy to irate.

Topic sentence 3: Second hand smoke is also harmful.
Passive smoking is the inhalation of smoke, called secondhand smoke (SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), from tobacco products used by others.(wikipedia) A wide array of negative effects are attributed, in whole or in part, to frequent, short term and long term exposure to second hand smoke.
Here are some details about these negative effects:
1.Generally increase the rate of cancer which includes lung cancer and breast cancer.
2. increase the rate of diseases such as renal cell carcinoma and brain tumor.
3. Really bad effect for children growth if they are exposed in passive smoking.
Conclusion: Smoking is harmful to our society. Smokers should try their best to abstain smoking.

C&C

Topic: the difference and similarity of choosing cats or dogs as pets.

Difference:

1 Cats are wild and half domestic. On the other hand, dogs are totally domestic.

Supporting details:
cats often go to the outdoor for mostly a whole day, but dogs in the other hand, just need to be walked for half an hour every afternoon.

2 Cats are dishonest. However, dogs are honest and loyal to their masters.

Supporting details:
Cats are wild in their mind and cannot be fully trained. They will happy to be pets when masters give them good living conditions, otherwise, they are easy to leave the houses and never come back. But dogs are not that kind. Dogs are loyal to their masters even though their masters are really poor.

3. According to Taoism, men should not keep cats as pets and women should not keep dogs as pets because dogs belongs to yang and cats, in the other hand, belongs to yin while men belongs to yang and women belongs to yin. When men and cats, or women and dogs are together, the harmony between yin and yang will no longer exist and that may cause some problems. Although it is just a theory without scientific evidence, there is still some evidence based on facts.

Supporting Details:
Actress such as Paris Hilton, Emma Watson keep cats as their pets. In the other hand, athletes such as Alen Iverson, who’s favourite pet is bulldog, and Kobe Bryant choose dogs as their pets.

Similarities:

1 People can have fun with both cats and dogs.

2 Both cats and dogs need us taking care of.

3 Both cats and dogs can be important members of the family.

Hey joy, I just make a slightly rewise about my C&C (write more details about my 3 point) because I did not got any comments on my 1st draft C&C outline because of my late submission. So sorry.

How to avoid being a procrastinator

As a college student, we have to face a lot of campus activities and numerous homework and also homework’s deadlines. So, a good time-management skill is really useful and crucial for us to survive in our university: we should avoid us being procrastinators. Now, let me share some of my own experience and point of view.

The most effective way to avoid procrastination is that we should make a daily schedule, such as, when should we get up? When should we leave our dormitory for class? Shall we study at 7 to 10 pm every Monday to Thursday and play dota at every Friday night? After we made this schedule, we have to print it out and paste it in front of our desk to remind us to follow the schedule. Then, we can by a calendar to put on our desk. This calendar is used for reminding us about our deadlines of homework and our time for appointments. Once we know the schedule of our homework deadline or our appointment, we just write them on the calendar and follow it. The advantage to write things down is it can be a better reminder to us about our plans because we can see the reminders as soon as we sitting in front of our desk.

Second, we should bring up good habits for our time-managements. We should put our assignments and homework in the first priority. Do not finish our homework just before the deadline. We should finish our homework as soon as we can, maybe we can finish our homework assignment several days, say 3days, before the deadline. No wonder that we can enjoy these 3 days doing whatever we want without worrying about our homework. On the other hand, if we put all our assignments at the deadline day, we have no choice to study continuously, of course with a low efficiency, for many hours, otherwise we will grade zero on out assignments. As a result, we should control our life by ourselves, not be controlled by the assignment deadlines.

Also, we have to boycott the seductions such as video games, fraternity parties, during our working time in our schedule. What I mean is, we should follow our schedule. For example, if I originally plan to finish my Calculus assignments, which dues on Sunday, from 7 to 9 am at Thursday night, but my best friend John, ask me to play DotA with him at 8. Though I really want to play dota with him, I still have to finish my homework. See, after I finished the homework, I have numerous hours to play dota. On the other hand, if I cannot boycott the seduction from John, I may spent my whole Thursday on playing dota with John, certainly, I may play basketball with Tony at Friday night and go to Frat Party with Cindy at Saturday. When I realize that I still have a maths homework undone, it is Sunday night already!

To conclude, writing down our schedules, buying calendar as reminders and protesting different kinds of seductions can help us avoid procrastination. Remember, we are the host of our live. We control our lives by ourselves, rather than our actions are controlled by time, if we avoid being procrastinators.
